This months Topic is Outsourcing...

Have you considered outsourcing parts or all of your IT Service Delivery? Before moving forward consider the following questions, they are just a few of the types of questions that you to consider. If you answer NO to any of these questions take a deep breath and re-consider your plans.
  • Do you know the true cost of all the elements of the delivered service, not the overall budget.
    • E.g. The true/real cost of the Service Desk, would includes infrastructure(central systems, central software, central network, maintenance), desktop hardware, desktop software, licenses, local network, engineering support for equipment and associated technology refreshes. This can be rolled-up as a cost per call.

  • Do you know all the elements that constitute your IT service delivery?

  • Do you know how many calls your service desk handle each month?

  • Do you know how many changes you handle each month?

  • Do you have an agreed list of metrics that are measured and reported on?

  • Do you have agreed Service Levels with your suppliers?

If you have trouble answering these questions then you have a problem and should not continue with thoughts of outsourcing.
There are a number of organisations that will help you with the planning process but most them, certainly with the major players, will use a standard template and will work to get you an industry standard solution.
